Suspended vs. disabled profile: what changes
When Google restricts a Business Profile, it falls into one of two states1. If your profile is suspended, you lose management access—sometimes the listing remains visible on Google Maps, and sometimes it disappears completely. If it is disabled, it is hidden from the public entirely. In both cases, never create a duplicate profile: Google will flag the new listing too and delay your reinstatement1.
The five mistakes that trigger a suspension
Google rarely names the exact rule violation in its notification email. Before filing an appeal, audit your profile against Google's official guidelines1:
- Keyword stuffing in the business name: writing "Smith Plumbing – 24/7 Emergency Plumber London" instead of "Smith Plumbing" violates representation guidelines. Your name on Google must match your real-world signage and business registration.
- Virtual offices or P.O. boxes: coworking mail drops and virtual offices without permanent signage and staff are prohibited. Service-area businesses that visit customers must hide their street address and declare a service area instead.
- Rapid bulk edits: changing your business name, primary category, phone number and website all within a few minutes frequently triggers an automated security lock.
- Multiple listings at the same address: operating two profiles for the same business or overlapping businesses at one address causes suspensions.
- Review policy violations: offering discounts, gifts or prize-wheel games in exchange for reviews violates Google's Contribution Policy2 and can trigger profile restrictions3. Read our guide to getting more Google reviews without breaking the rules.
Gather your evidence before opening the Appeals Tool
Once you start an appeal in Google's Appeals Tool, you have a limited time window to attach your supporting evidence1. Prepare these documents before you click submit:
- Official business registration or license showing the exact business name and address.
- A recent utility bill (electricity, water, landline phone or internet) or signed commercial lease at the same address.
- Clear photos of your permanent storefront signage taken from the street, plus interior photos. If you run a service-area business, include photos of your branded vehicle and work equipment.
How to submit your reinstatement appeal
First, fix any guideline violations on your profile (remove extra keywords from the title, or hide your street address if you do not serve customers on-site), following our Google Business Profile checklist. Then open Google's official Appeals Tool1, select your profile, upload your evidence bundle in a single submission and briefly state what you corrected. Avoid sending duplicate tickets, which resets your place in the queue.
What if your reviews are missing after reinstatement?
After a profile is reinstated, historical reviews can take several days to repopulate4. If your reviews have not returned after a week, reply directly to Google Support's reinstatement confirmation email rather than opening a brand-new ticket. See our guide to missing or delayed Google reviews for the full recovery checklist.
